In Germany (Berlin, left, as well as elsewhere, right), the public transportation policy is that you should have a ticket — but they only check now and again (by surprise). When you first ride, therefore, you stamp your ticket, to show when it was first used and where you got on.

As a happy coincidence, other pieces of paper fit in, and trigger, the stamping machines.
