It turns out that in XHTML 1.0 Strict, target="new" is an illegal <a> attribute. Bummer. Also, it doesn't like images that aren't inside anything but <body>. However, most of my pages now validate as XHTML 1.0 Strict. (The downside is that IE still doesn't believe in this page - either normal or alternate CSS - and doesn't render my front page's menu... but Firefox and Safari like it, so I'm unconvinced there's really a problem with my code. And Firefox has a hard time with too much transparency, and my menu goes but doesn't come back, but...)
