Not An Image, And The Font's From Google

If your browser supports CSS font resources (browser list from Google), the above will be a sample of Kranky, made available by Google web fonts.

CSS has a rule to tell the browser where to go get a custom font, so the designer can use something custom and specific even if the person looking at the web site doesn't have it on their computer — and without turning text into images. Google web fonts hosts a number of fonts which anyone can use to this end. (There's also some text-shadow on that one, for good measure.)
